Welcome to our first STEAM-y review here on the new and improved Nerd in the Brain!

What the heck is a STEAM-y review??? Nothing sordid or naughty, I promise! Nope, STEAM-y reviews are the quick summary of thoughts (from me and whichever family members I could snag at the moment) on various and assorted STEAM (Science/Technology/Engineering/Art/Math) toys and kits. Because my family knows how to party, we have about a giggledy-jillion STEAM-y toys sitting around the house, and we would be failures as humans if we didn’t let you know the skinny about each one! We’ll let you know the ones we think are awesome…and the ones that you should probably keep your wallet well away from. 🙂

Today on STEAM-y Reviews, we’re taking a look at:

Magnet Science from Kidz Labs

Rather than babble your face off about what’s included in this kit, I’ll just show you…

A STEAM-y Review: Magnet Science Bits & Pieces | Nerd in the Brain

Yeah, lots of magnet-y goodness. 🙂

We’ve decided to rate these STEAM-y kits and activities in four categories…then averages will be taken, algorithms will be applied, offerings will be made to the math-y gods, geometric dances will be performed, and we’ll come up with a final rating that fits neatly into the 0 -10 range.

And what are those four categories?

  • Ease of Use: Do you need to be a rocket surgeon to interpret the instructions, or are things pretty clear?
  • Quality: Are the bits and pieces up to their STEAM-y tasks?
  • STEAM-iness: Is there any actual STEAM-y value, or is it a goofy toy posing as an educational bit of fun?
  • Fun: I think that one’s pretty self explanatory. 😉

Now that you know the criteria we’re peeking at, let’s have a look at how Magnet Science did in each category…

Magnet Science was rated by me and Grace (the 15-year-old).

Ease of Use:

Emily: 9 out of 10

Grace: 9 out of 10

Notes: There was one little part of the instructions that was a bit unclear. Everything else was easy-peasy to understand.

Emily: 9 out of 10

Grace: 8 out of 10

Notes: Most of the parts were definitely up to the task, and things were very cleverly designed to be multi-purpose. A couple of pieces could have been beefed up a bit. (The fishing activity comes to mind.)

A STEAM-y Review: Magnet Science Magic | Nerd in the Brain

Emily: 9 out of 10

Grace: 9 out of 10

Notes: The kit definitely contained solid information about magnets and magnetism…with lots of hands-on activities to demonstrate. The only thing that kept us from going with 10s instead of 9s is that we felt like older kids didn’t have much to gain (knowledge-wise) from the information. It would have been nice to see some more “advanced” information included to make this kit appeal to a broader range of ages.  (Especially since the package just says “Over 8.”)

Emily: 9 out of 10

Grace: 8 out of 10

Notes: I apparently had a bit more fun than Grace did with this, but we both enjoyed the activities…and continued to just goof off and play with the magnets after we had done the “official” activities.

Our Final Score for Magnet Science:

8.75 out of 10!

This review was for a product that I purchased with my very own pennies. It was not a paid review.

Sounds neat! Will have to look into that for LM. He did a science project on magnetizing objects a couple years ago and really got into it.

I bet he’d have fun with the Magnet Science kit…but if he’s already tinkered quite a bit with magnets, there probably won’t be much “new” information for him…but just having fun with magnets is cool, too. 🙂

I feel like my kiddo would really enjoy this! She loves to play with magnets.

The kit does have some nifty stuff in it…I really liked the magnetic “car,” and even though the fishing activity could have been more awesome, it was still pretty fun. 🙂 (And it’s just nice to have a couple more fairly powerful magnets around the house.)
