#WeekendCoffeeShare: The One Where I Have a Week of Firsts

Hello, beautiful blog friends! Come on in and pour yourself a big cup of coffee…the dinosaurs just made it, and it is delicious. 🙂 Go ahead and snuggle in for a chat. It’s a little chilly out (crazy North Carolina weather), so you might want a sweater or a cozy throw blanket.

I have a very interesting thing happening today, and you all may be amazed! My plans for the day are…

Nothing!

Can you believe it?!? I actually don’t have a single thing on the agenda. I mean, yeah, there are things that I’ll probably do (take the trash, knit, read, laundry), but no actual plans. Amazing, no? 😉 John has to work today (some nutty has-to-be-done-over-the-weekend project), so we’re not going for our usual outing. We don’t have any events scheduled for tonight. Nothing. And it feels kind of weird. 😉

So, those are my (non)plans for today, but what have I been up to this past week? I’ve been up to a tremendous amount of firsts! Most importantly (in my mind), my first ever brand new car! Wanna see it??? I hope you do…because here comes the picture…

Weekend Coffee Share: New Car | Nerd in the Brain

He tells me his name is Frederick, and he’s a 2017 Kia Soul +…with the fancy two-color paint job. 😀 I loooooove him!

I have never, ever had a new car before. I’ve never even picked out my own car before. I’ve always had hand-me-downs or gifts or whatnot…never one that I picked just for me.

John will also be getting a new car, but he’s being a bit persnickety about what he wants, so we have a lot more test drives and car dealer conversations in our future. 😉

Now before anyone thinks the two of us are too, too spoiled, I will point out that we’ve been sharing a 2005 Chevy Cobalt for years. A 2005 Chevy Cobalt that has been a wonderful, wonderful friend to us, but has over 250,000 miles, a cracked windshield, a wonky rim that makes the car go wooble-wobble-wooble when we go over 50mph (you’d think that would be an easy fix, but we’ve had it worked on about 100 times, and it won’t go away!), and a transmission that’s heaving its last gasps.

So, yeah, this whole idea of having two reliable cars is pretty fantastic. 😀

Other firsts for the week? My first time getting a professional to design a logo for Nerd in the Brain (to be revealed later), my first time staring down a car dealer who was trying to convince me to finance when I wanted to buy outright, and my first time voting on scholarship recipients (that’s a winding and not particularly interesting story).

Oh, and I was elected vice president of the PTSO. (I only made my family call me Madam Vice President for one evening.) 😉

So, what else have I been up to this week? Not much outside of the usual “getting business ducks in a row, keeping the house and family orderly and functional, planning stuff for Grace’s school, volunteering at the cat shelter” gigs that I usually tend to. 🙂

I have spent some time wondering why in the world buying a car is so complicated? Holy cow, that’s a complex maneuver…and that’s when there were no loans or liens involved. So many games to be played (gross) and papers to be signed and upsells to be rejected (more gross). While I love having a new car, the process of getting there was tough on my brain.

And all of that made me wonder what else in life is way too complicated? What am I over-complicating? What could I be making simpler and easier and smoother and less nonsensical? While I’m sure there are answers to these questions, I haven’t yet nailed them down, but I’ll be sure to report back to you if I discover anything fascinating. 🙂

But thinking about it has, of course, made me think that some animal therapy is in order! Because you know who doesn’t make things complicated? This guy…

Yeah, I bet he’s never even been to a car dealership. 😉

And now it’s your turn! What has your week been like? What have you been up to? Any interesting firsts going on in your world? Dealing with anything that’s too complicated to be reasonable? Tell us all about it while the dinosaurs pour you some fresh coffee. 🙂

And until we chat again, I hope you have an amazing week full of love and hugs and giggles and learning and fun! ♥

Hi Madam Vice President. I won’t say how many times I’ve bought new cars, nor will I complain too much about the stupid, idiotic process. Ooops, sorry. Was that a complaint? Congratulations on your new car! And congratulations on your empty schedule! I hope you have a great week ahead.

It really is a stupid, idiotic process…and I was really a bit taken aback by how pushy they were about financing. I realize they must make extra money when customers finance (the only possible reason I can think of for them to be so determined to get me to take out a loan), but geez! All said and done, though, I have a shiny new car, so I’m happy. 🙂

I hope your week is fantastic…and relaxing…and free of new car nonsense. 🙂

Thank you! It’s sort of funny…in the weeks leading up to buying the car (with all of the research and determining which features I wanted and whatnot), I insisted that I did NOT want a red car. Noooo red cars for me. And then what did I do? I picked a red one. The black bits on the top just changed everything for me. 🙂

It’ll take me a good 10 years to save up for another one, so I’m hoping it’s a good one for a nice, long time.

I hope you have an amazing weekend! 😀

The bonus is that red cars are easy for other drivers to see – so no chance of being missed 🙂
        Have a good week too.

Congrats on the new car! Last one I bought, I took a photo from the website of the dealer, test drove that exact car, said I’d buy it within 15 minutes and it STILL took 4 hours. I don’t understand why they torture us so…… 🙂

Fredrick is an elegant name for the car. It is darling, and I am sure you will get much pleasure out of owning it. Thanks for coffee.

Frederick is absolutely amazing. Hope hubby isn’t too jealous of him. I’ve yet to own a brand new car myself (I’m severely allergic to car payments so no new car till I can buy it out right, like you). When I was young(er) my dream car was a 1968 Mustang convertible, red with a black roof. Think I would pick something more practical now but defiantly something smaller than my current “bus.” It corners like a refrigerator on wheels!

Hope you enjoy your nothing weekend!

Congrats on your new wheels!! He’s gorgeous.. And, it much be such a relief now to have your own instead of having to coordinate. And it’s NEW!!! (deep inhale) I’ve never had a new car either. And I probably won’t! My husband is a mechanic. 🙂 Have a GREAT week!

Hellol Madad Vice President 😉, and congratulations on your new car. I know the feeling of dealing with car dealership sales people – Was in that situation once upon a long long time ago. Same thing, guy kept trying to talk us into financing (something we wouldn’t have been able to do as our situation is/was such that we can’t afford payments, it had just so happen that we had received a large sum of money and were looking to buy out right – no financing). Enjoy your week.

Frederick is beautiful! Congrats! And that’s awesome you paid outright for it. No added interest for you.

The pic of the animal didn’t come up on my screen. I am so curious what kind of animal it was.

Having nothing planned is an awesome thing. I love doing things at my leisure.

I really had nothing planned yesterday until I woke up fully rested and contacted a good friend to do dinner. I was in luck. Her husband is in Myrtle Beach at their other house. So she was free. So at first we were going to meet for sushi and then we decided Mexican. Tried a new dish and we had the waiter divide the avocado salad on 2 plates and also the yummy salmon with mango habanero sauce and coconut white rice and finally black beans on the side. The waiter also put the salmon meal on 2 plates. It was the perfect portions for both of us and so tasty! I had a pomegranate margarita followed by a mango margarita. My friend doesn’t drink so she ordered a classic virgin margarita.

Oh and Bella and Charlee received a clean bill of health from the vet. The vet enjoyed their visit and said they were his best patients. I must say they were on their best behavior. And thankfully Charlee didn’t get carsick on the way there like she did last time.

Today I am getting caught up on much needed housework that was severely neglected while I was studying this semester. Hoping to get a walk in around the lake also though it’s a bit chilly.

And finally I am anxiously awaiting the results of the qualifying exam. I hope to have an answer by Friday. The waiting is killing me as it pretty much decides my fate for my career. Yikes!!! That walk around the lake is necessary to relieve stress and anxiety.

Enjoy the rest of your weekend!

Congrats on the new car and your newly elected position! I was quite lucky when buying my first new car in that my partner’s family has been buying cars from the same dealer for over a decade, so he was super helpful and very no-nonsense/no up-sell shenanigans. It was definitely appreciated!
