#WeekendCoffeeShare: The One Where I Keep On Making Tough Decisions

Good morning, beautiful blog pals! I hope your Saturday is off to an amazing start! I’m actually writing this post on Friday afternoon, but I promise the dinos will provide fresh, delicious coffee for you whenever you stop by. 😉

Wait! Writing on Friday?!? Emily doing something in advance? Whatever for? Well, the answers are twofold, my lovelies. The first bit is that I have one heck of a busy Saturday coming my way. John and I are super-excited to be going to the grand opening of a disc golf course at our favorite park…and, of course, breakfast at a beloved restaurant has to happen first. (Who knew the best pancakes in existence could be found in a country kitchen that shares a parking lot with a feed store?) 😉 As soon as we’re finished up with that bundle of fun, we’ll be scooting off to our town’s Heritage Festival. (Plants, education, games, and food trucks? Yes, please!) Needless to say, it’ll be a twirly day. 🙂

And that other reason? In an effort to re-focus my energies on the business that is Nerd in the Brain, I’ve begun taking part in a lot of Think Creative Collective‘s offerings…and those ladies know what they’re doing! In just a few days, I’ve improved my organization and focus. I’ve defined goals and begun ticking off the steps I need to complete to accomplish said goals. And I’ve revised my “to do” plans for each day in such a way that I’m actually…wait for it…getting stuff done! 🙂 Neat!

So, yeah, this week has been full to the top with decisions. Decisions on top of choices on top of options on top of determinations. 🙂 Just a few of the things I’ve been pondering and deciding…

  • Why do I have all of this stuff that I never, ever, ever use in my office? (I’ve been in the midst of a ruthless declutter like none I’ve done before…clearing the physical space so the mental space has room to exist. Even as a person who doesn’t keep a lot of clutter, I still have tons of things that I can easily part with.)

  • Why is my blog that is supposed to be STEAM-focused completely and utterly lacking in STEAM posts lately? Yep, it’s totally time to bring that around. I’m in “carefully plan” mode (not a mode I’m super familiar with when it comes to blogging, to be honest), so the big changes won’t be happening until late May/early June, but some things are already happening. I’ve already removed most of the home/cleaning/organizing stuff from the blog…because it just doesn’t fit with my business and blog goals. (See? Every once in a while I look up from my dinosaurs and snuffle up some reality juice.) 😉

  • Speaking of tough blog decisions, I’ve been putting a lot of thought into Three Things Thursday. I’m not sure yet if I want to keep the series (one I’ve been doing for years now) and re-frame it in a STEAM-y light somehow or pass the torch to someone else. I do have a person in mind who I think would take good care of the series, but if you have a burning interest in taking it over, let me know in the comments.

  • The social media beast…yikes! If I’m going to focus my blog efforts on STEAM topics, I should certainly be following suit on my other social media accounts. But I do love sharing the day-to-day fun of life, so I’m trying to come up with a way to make all of my brains happy. 😉 (Which is probably going to involve dividing Emily and Nerd in the Brain on Facebook, doing a massive clean up on Pinterest, and starting some re-framing on Instagram…I do hate to have more than one account on any given bit of social media.)

  • Should I dye all of my hair lavender…or just the tips…or should I go with streaks? 🙂

Those are just a few of the things that have been rattling about in the brain cage over the last few days. 😉

What about you? Are you working on any tough decisions right now? Have you ever done a reevaluate and “turn this beast around” plan for your blog and/or business? (Please tell me you were super-successful with it if you did.) Have you been thinking of driving parts of your life in a different direction? Do you set goals for your blog/business/life? (Like firm, measurable, written-down type goals…not I’m-going-to-be-a-trillionaire-and-throw-glitter-parties-on-my-unicorn-farm type goals.) 😉

So, what else is going on in the world? Hmmmm. There was the whole Unicorn Frappuccino thing. Grace and I really wanted to try them, but by the time we made it to Starbucks, they were already sold out. 🙁 It was a bit disappointing that they didn’t have enough to last the whole availability schedule, but it certainly wasn’t the travesty that some people on social media are making it out to be…not for us anyway. 😉

I was actually really shocked by the way people were acting about a Starbucks drink on Facebook and Instagram and other social media….so, so much negativity and so, so many sanctimonious attitudes. It makes me feel all sanctimonious about not being sanctimonious when I see all of that my-choices-are-better-than-yours judging and holier-than-thou barking…and then I feel all conflicted and weird (especially when someone actually has a pretty good point, but they say it in such a way that I’d kind of like to kick them in the shins). 😉

What about you? Do you feel conflicted and weird about being intolerant of intolerance or judge-y about judgmental people or sanctimonious about not being sanctimonious? Has anyone figured out a way to reconcile those feelings…or is everyone in the same twirly-headed place I am on the matter?

Maybe some more cute animal therapy can help us work it out…or at least make us not so worried about working it out. 😉 Let’s look at some otters, shall we???

There now, that’s a bit better, no? 🙂

Okay, I have babbled quite enough. I’m excited to hear what’s going on with you! What’s new in your world? What new thoughts are rattling your brain cage? Tell me all about it!

And until we chat again, I hope you have an amazing week full of love and hugs and giggles and learning and fun! ♥

OK, I gotta ask…. What is STEAM? Thank you!

    • Nerd in the Brain April 22, 2017 at 8:30 am

STEAM is Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, and Math. 😀

  • taylorgraceauthor April 22, 2017 at 8:11 am

Love, LOVE the otters and good luck with your decisions. They sound pretty tough!

    • Nerd in the Brain April 22, 2017 at 8:33 am

So glad you love the otters! 😀

I definitely do have some humdingers of decisions to make, but I think things are going in a good direction…I feel kind of renewed and ready to focus on a path instead of flooping about. 🙂

I hope you’re having a fantastic start to your weekend!

  • trentpmcd April 22, 2017 at 8:38 am

It sounds like one busy day! Have a great time, and enjoy a pancake for me (actually, I’m more of a French Toast person). I can understand the Three Things thing. I’m in a place that I’m not sure I can keep the Weekly Smile going much longer.

Anyway, I hope you have a great week!

    • Nerd in the Brain April 22, 2017 at 8:55 am

Mmmmm….French toast. 🙂 I love them equally. And waffles! Love those, too. 😀

Yeah, part of me hates the idea of letting go of Three Things, but another part of me knows that it’s time…it just doesn’t fit the “mission” of the blog. I also kind of like the idea of just sharing happy-making things all the time on Instagram and Facebook…no more holding pictures back to save them for Three Things. 🙂 I hope whatever you decide about the Weekly Smile series leaves you content and heading down a happy blog path!

      Have a wonderful week! 😀

  • LavendarLadi April 22, 2017 at 9:10 am

Thanks for the coffee. Here’s my two cents. (ok it will have to be a nickle since we don’t have pennies anymore)
I’m inspired by you re-focusing your blog. That’s part of my “to do in 2017” I don’t know about all social media but FB and WordPress are fairly easy to have more than one account.
As for Three Things Thursday. I can understand needing the time free from organising an ongoing project. But may I suggest that you keep it in some form (maybe STEAM things that tickle your fancy?) I’m a big supporter of making time to focus on being grateful 🙂
And (I warned you 5 cents worth) I vote for lavender tips but as you may guess I’m a fan of whatever form of lavender hair you choose. I know you’ll rock the look!
    Have a wonderful weekend!

    • Nerd in the Brain April 23, 2017 at 9:33 am

Oh, I do love it when I inspire someone! 🙂 I look forward to seeing what you do with your blog!

I totally agree about making time to focus on gratitude…it’s definitely something I do every single day…I’m just not sure if I want/need it to continue being part of my blog. Of course, if it encourages other people to focus on happiness, it’s totally worth it, but that’s where passing it on to another blogger comes in. I think I could be happy knowing that the series continued to exist even if it wasn’t here. Or, like you said, I could make my three things each week focused on STEAM. I’m still mulling over the possibilities. 🙂

The lavender tips definitely appeal…tips make for a much smoother transition when they start to fade. I do also like the thought of just having a big ol’ head of lavender though. I’m planning to make things happen in the next couple of weeks, so you’ll find out what I decide soon. 😀

I hope your week is 100% fantastic!

  • carolaadamsrnbc April 22, 2017 at 9:31 am

I am most excited about what you decide to do with your hair. I love the purples people are putting in their hair these days. Though I could never pull it off. Can’t wait to see the pics once you decide and get it done.

I will continue to follow your blog whatever you decide to do with it.

I really need to get off of my butt and start a blog. My journey needs documented. I think I should be able to handle weekly posts at a minimum.

Enjoy your adventurous Saturday! Mine will be spent reading and writing. I have an assignment due on a mixed methods research proposal. Only 3 page paper. I should be able to whip that out on this rainy weekend. Last assignment for this class and then preparation for the qualifying exam on May 1.

Oh and before I forget I am going to watch The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks on HBO tonight. It is based on a true story where this lady’s cells were used for research without her permission. She died of cervical cancer and they discovered her cells grew rapidly when put in a petri dish. Her cells went on to save many lives. A movie or book you might enjoy…..I started the book but just haven’t had time to finish it.

    • Nerd in the Brain April 23, 2017 at 9:39 am

I do wish you would start a blog (if you have time) because I would love to read it. 🙂

I’m still on the fence about the hair decision…knowing me, I won’t decide for certain until it’s time to pull the trigger. (That’s often how I make these types of choices…when I got my eyebrow pierced, I went from considering the notion to having a new hole in my face in less than 30 minutes.) 😉

I definitely want to watch/read The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks. I need to see if our library has the book or movie available!

I hope you’re having a fabulous weekend with a bit of fun thrown in with the paper writing. 🙂

      • carolaadamsrnbc April 23, 2017 at 9:44 am

FYI: The movie wasn’t that great. Book is much better so far. I think that is generally the case though…..

  • Pamela Morse April 22, 2017 at 9:41 am

lavender streaks!!! not doubt. I think blog format is important too. I have strayed form my original purpose of covering wellness subjects ..I just decided everything is wellness. Good luck with that stuff. Thanks for coffee, and as always, thanks for hosting the party.

    • Nerd in the Brain April 23, 2017 at 9:42 am

I know what you mean about deciding everything fits within a topic! That’s sort of what I did with STEAM stuff (because, really, what doesn’t fit in there?), but then I totally stopped putting a STEAM spin on things. 😉

I’ll definitely be letting y’all know what I decide on the hair thing! 😀

  • bettylouise31 April 22, 2017 at 10:19 am

You have been busy and have a fun and tiring day plan. Enjoy it!

    • Nerd in the Brain April 23, 2017 at 9:43 am

It was an absolutely great day! I hope your weekend is also full of enjoyment! 😀

  • eclecticalli April 22, 2017 at 2:48 pm

Busy busy! I’ve been pulling myself back into the world of functioning like a.. functional human being (not a human bean, as I first typed but.. maybe that’s like the seedling start of a human-like-thing?) but I’ve got some BIG change thoughts lurking around in the back of my head (some inspired by you, to tell the truth — I’ll have to give you an update on a less public medium at some point as the ideas stew). Part of that also includes doing some real work around my “brand” and figuring out what I want to be doing with Eclectic Alli. Sitting down and doing some mission-statement type work to establish my purpose there and hopefully give myself a much needed sense of direction rather than just flaring up with whatever the thing of the moment is that catches my eye (especially since what normally follows that is the lull of no activity such as now where the only thing I have going is the Weekend Coffee Share). Lots to think about, lots to decide.
As for the hair… I’m tempted to tell you to go ALL lavendar because that is AWESOME. But streaks might be pretty cool too! I’m debating (and it depends on finances next month once all the important things have been paid for) doing an under-layer of color on my own hair – because it’s been AGES since I’ve had color in my hair.
Loved the Unicorn Frap. It was fun, and silly, and enjoyable (and, my god, SO MUCH SUGAR) but I got so annoyed with all the opinionated responses. Why do people always feel the need to impede on other people’s fun?

    • Nerd in the Brain April 23, 2017 at 9:49 am

Oh, I’m super curious about what I’ve inspired in your life! Let me know in Facebook Messenger or email or something…and I’ll be glad to help in any way I can! 😀

This: “just flaring up with whatever the thing of the moment is that catches my eye” I am so, so guilty of this! I’m doing exactly what you said…intentional planning that’s *not* about jumping into things crazy-style and then promptly fizzling out. It’s like training my brain to go a whole different way, but it does seem to be working. 🙂 Here’s to both of us getting our brand on! (We can doooooo it!)

If you get that under-layer, I want to see pictures…because that’s going to be fabulous! 😀

And I’m with you…why do some people always seem to want to rain on parades? *sigh*

  • Maggie C April 22, 2017 at 10:23 pm

I’m glad someone else asked about STEAM. I mean, who wants to write a blog that’s just a lot of hot air?

    • Nerd in the Brain April 23, 2017 at 9:50 am

Hehehe…that probably wouldn’t be a blog for long, would it? 😀

      • Maggie C April 23, 2017 at 12:24 pm

        There are some out there…

  • Kate Loveton April 22, 2017 at 11:06 pm

    lavender tips, definitely!

    • Nerd in the Brain April 23, 2017 at 9:51 am

Noted! I think I’m going to have to do a reveal post to let everyone know what I decide. 🙂

  • amiewrites74 April 23, 2017 at 3:07 am

I also vote for lavendar tips 🙂 Good luck with your decisions, focusing and reorganizing.

    • Nerd in the Brain April 23, 2017 at 9:53 am

Thank you! All of the changes are taking a lot of “up front” work, but I’m already seeing results, so that’s super-motivating and pleasing. 🙂

As for the lavender hair, I still haven’t decided, but I’ll be sure to post pictures once it’s done. 😀

      • amiewrites74 April 23, 2017 at 9:57 am

Results are good! Can’t wait to see the final results for your hair.

  • Elizabeth April 23, 2017 at 9:32 am

I love the addition of the cute animal therapy at the end of the post! I liked it last week, but otters?! Too cute!

Also, I’m for the lavender tips as well. Maybe the streaks, but I think if you go all lavender you’ll get bored with it too soon. Plus I can only imagine how damaging that could be to your hair. I don’t dye mine anymore. I have enough white (although you can’t see it until you get up close) that it looks weird, because they’re pure white hairs, like see through white! When I dye them, they come out a funny color, and then they are noticeable. People don’t really notice them at the moment, so why mess with a good thing?

I periodically go through and change my blog, but because it’s more for me than for anybody else, I rarely stick with the plan. The hope is that eventually I can just write and do blog stuff and make that my job, but at the moment, I still have to teach to pay the bills. Then again, I really do love teaching, so I may never make it to that stage… Anyway, have a great weekend (what’s left of it) and good luck with all the changes! Sounds positive, and I’m happy for you!

  • Natalie April 24, 2017 at 6:57 am

I hope you had a lovely time at the heritage show, I went to a similar one on Saturday 🙂

Good luck with all your home and blog organising, I’m looking forward to seeing the new changes 🙂 I really hope Three Things Thursday continues in some way as it really brightens up my week and reminds me that I have lots to be grateful for, even when I’m feeling down… thanks so much for creating it!

I’d love to try the Unicorn Frapp, but apparently there are no plans to bring it to the UK so it looks like I’ll have to pass on that one 🙁 I do think it’s crazy how people get so wound up about things like that when there are much bigger problems to worry about, It’s only a drink at the end of the day!

Also thank you for the otter pics, they’re one of my absolute favourites 😉 Hope you have a great week!

  • teachezwell April 26, 2017 at 1:27 am

Wow. That’s a lot of cogitation. First things first: lavender tips. But it really has to be something you love.
So my blog is about teaching and do you know how long it’s been since I wrote about teaching? I can identify with your STEAM concerns. I just don’t know how to attract a larger audience if I stick to my special ed niche. I’ve “met” a bunch of sweet folks and I also love blogging challenges. I’ll most likely follow whoever you’ve chosen for that honor.
I don’t do instagram and I don’t have time to invest in Pinterest, nor do I really care about it much. I wish I could be like you and get organized and decluttered but if I have free time, I read books like crazy. Making up for all the years I didn’t have time to read anything but educational stuff.
So what kind of business are you thinking of? And where did you run into these blog boosters/organizational queens?
I’m excited for you and always feel a longing to copy you but I never quite make it. Our place is a fire hazard of papers. And teaching stuff that I should toss. Ahh. So keep us all informed and perhaps I can successfully copy you some day!!
I’m glad you are on a path that makes more sense for you. 💕
