#WeekendCoffeeShare: The One Where I Make Life Decisions & Things

Good morning, amazing blog friends! I do hope you’re having a fabulous start to your weekend! Mine has been absolutely delicious so far…but that’s mostly because I “took the day off” yesterday. How does a stay-at-home, small-business-running, volunteer type take the day off? Simple! Grace had a teacher workday and I noticed that I had no appointments of any kind on the calendar for the day, so I just took it off. No cleaning, no cooking, no work of any kind…I spent the day knitting and watching whatever I felt like on TV. When John finished up with work, we ran out to grab an obnoxious amount of fast food (to keep up my day of no cleaning and no cooking) and returned home to eat terrible food while watching Z Nation in our jammies. Wow, did I ever need that!

I apologize for the fact that I only have store-bought snacks again, but yesterday’s “plan” didn’t allow for baking. 😉 The dinosaurs have made us some delicious coffee, so go ahead and pour yourself a cup! Feel free to snuggle into the couch and cover up with a nice throw blanket because it’s chilly out there…31 degrees feels particularly cold after the Summer-like weather we’ve been having for the past few days.

Okay, let’s get our chat on!

My day off yesterday also gave me some nice time to sit back and think…and prioritize a bit. After several weeks of nonstop running around headless-chicken-style (and looking at a calendar of more headless-chicken-style activity for the next few weeks), I finally came to the conclusion that I need to look at how I’m spending my time…and be honest with myself about if I’m spending my time in a way that lines up with my priorities.

But here’s what the “get your life together” expert people never tell you…what to do if the way you’re spending your time absolutely does line up with your priorities and you’re still doing too much. What then? Because, y’all, I seriously love all of the stuff I do. I love taking care of my family, and I love that we have lots of experiences as a family. (I wouldn’t dream of canceling our full moon hike next week…or ditching our ballet tickets!) I love supporting Grace’s school…because not only am I showing Grace that her world matters to me, I’m also supporting young people in the arts, and I can’t think of a better use of my time. I love creating educational products. I love blogging and the blogging community. I love volunteering and giving my time to those who need me.

So, what do you cut loose when your nutty amount of running around is too much, but there’s no clear choice of a thing that doesn’t fit your priorities???

Well, for this year, I’ve made a tough choice…a choice I’m not super-happy about, but I see the need for it. I’ve decided to not have a Relay for Life team this year. I’ll still go to the event. I’ll still walk. I’ll still help to raise money. But I’m going to, for this year, skip all of the work and planning and organizing involved in having a booth at the event. It hurts my heart to give this up, but I’m afraid my mental well being needs that to happen. I plan to resume Relay for Life activities next year…and I’ll start getting my mess together much, much earlier to avoid frazzled burn out. 🙂

And I’m putting a lot of thought into time management. Though I love all of the things I do, are they all worthy of the amount of time I spend on them? In some areas I should be doing less, but in other areas, I definitely need to be doing more. (*cough* *sputter* blogging *cough*)

So, yeah, lots of thoughts about priorities and time management knocking around the brain thing this week. So, what about you? Do you have any fabulous tips and tricks for getting things done when you need/want to get things done in about 50 different directions? Do you ever do the sit-back-and-take-stock-of-priorities thing? Are you good at matching how you spend your time to the things that are important to you? Tell me all of your thoughts on the matter! 🙂

In other news, those of us in my part of the world are spending our days being more than a little flummoxed by the weather. Imagine my surprise when I went to check the weather on Thursday and saw this:

Weekend Coffee Share: Weather Forecast | Nerd in the Brain

Why, yes that is a day of nearly 80 degrees on Thursday and then a prediction for snow on Sunday. Isn’t that exciting? 😉 Us Southern folk are pretty well known for our flipping right out when we even hear the word snow, but you should see how we react when we’ve already started preparing the mental armor that allows us to continue to function when it’s 105 degrees with 95% humidity. There’s chaos in the streets, y’all! Okay, not really, but people are totally not ready to deal with this development. 🙂 Of course, last time it “snowed,” we were told we would get almost a foot of the fluffy stuff…and then we got about 0.0000001 inches of snow with some ice mixed in. We shall see, we shall see.

I know I didn’t share very much this week, but I want to hear all of your news! What’s going on in your lives? Anything fun or interesting? Anything just weighing on your mind? Tell me all about it! (Did you know that I actually read every single Weekend Coffee Share post in the link ups? I don’t always have time to comment, but I do read those puppies…and love doing it!)

After I hear what’s happening in your world, I’ll need to go get ready for my day of hiking and feasting with John. We’re planning to do a particularly bang up job of it today since we’ll have company next weekend and won’t get our weekly walking-talking-feasting fix. 😉 (But we will get the pleasure of hanging out with people we love, so win!)

And now it’s time for you to show me (and the rest of the Coffee Share crew) yours!

And until we chat again, I hope you have an amazing week full of love and hugs and giggles and learning and fun! ♥

I’ll trade you weather forecasts 😉 It is currently 8. No, that is not 8 Cs, that is 8 little Fs…. And a foot or two of the white stuff for Tuesday/Wednesday…. Oh well…. I do sometimes sit back and think about what I really want to do, etc. I’m not always great at prioritizing, but sometimes it is nice to sit back and take stock.

I hope you have a great week!

I actually don’t mind the cold too much…and I love a good snow, but I do wish the weather would be reasonable and cut out this 80 degrees and snow in the same week nonsense. 😉 Enjoy your multiple feet of snow! (That would be a disaster here…we just don’t have the equipment and driving skills to deal with that kind of snow.)

I know what you mean with the prioritizing. Mine kind of ended up with “Family” at the top and everything else with equal footing just below that…probably not ideal for an orderly, calm life. 🙂

A happy, happy (snowy) week to you!

Ah, I totally feel you on the cutting down on stuff front…I am way overloaded but love everything we do! I guess having to chose what to cut out of your life for a while when you love all of it is paradoxically a great sign of a fantastic life! 🙂

I suppose what I do is look at what’s going to benefit us and me most as a family right now. With the girls being 3 and 6 months there are lots of activities and ideas we come up with that we really don’t have to do and will save for when they’re a little older. It’s a fine balance, isn’t it!

Thanks for sharing, and for the link up 🙂 see you next week x

Oh, I do like your thought on this being a sign of a fantastic life…because I sure do feel like I’m having a great one. 😀

It is a fine balance, indeed! With Grace being almost 16, I feel like we’re trying to squish in every moment of family fun we can before she’s off to college in a couple of years…all while making sure she has lots of experiences that will help her get into college…and a fun social life…and a successful high school “career.” It’s definitely a balancing act.

I hope you have an absolutely beautiful week!

Your day off sounds absolutely fabulous! We are in for a real treat on Tuesday. Weather forecasters haven’t said how much snow but they have predicted schools will be closed on Tuesday and Wednesday. That is exciting because that means I might not be going to work either. My day program where I work follows the county school weather closures.

Time management. Good one! I never really thought about it until I returned to school for my PhD studies. That sucker takes a huge amount of my time…..much more than I ever would have imagined. So everything else in my life takes a backseat. I wish I would have realized earlier the amount of time it would involve as I would have quit my 80 hr a week stressful admin position much sooner. 30 hours a week is so much more manageable! I think the best advice I got from my mentor was to do a little something each day. That way it is not so overwhelming to do everything for your schoolwork all at once. That actually helps with anything. Cleaning/preparing meals/etc. I also learned to take advantage of the breaks throughout the year and plan fun stuff. There is no time for socializing or really fun stuff in the mist of it all. I was just actually on “spring break” this past week.

Enjoy your weekend! My weekend will be filled with reading and writing. Maybe a little movie or Netflix watching later.

(Definitely a lot less dramatic than last week’s stalking at Walmart! Refer to FB post for that if you missed it.)

I totally agree with your “a little each day” plan…that helps tremendously with big/ongoing projects. (It’s definitely how I tackle house cleaning.)

I’m so glad your new job has you in a better situation for school! That is fantastic! 😀

I hope you have a wonderful weekend with absolutely no stalkers! (I did read that post, by the way. Yikes!)

It’s tough to prioritize when you’re doing what you like, but sometimes there are just too many darned activities in your life. I know. I’ve been there, too. But take heart! As you get older, it gets easier. You just don’t have as much energy, so you must choose. One of the benefits of aging. 🙂

Hehe…maybe I’ll just wait until my energy taps out and let my very busy nap schedule determine what I do. 😀 Hmmmm…maybe I should do that now…I do love a good nap.

I hope you have an amazing week full of fun and happiness!

Hopefully it will warm up enough for your hiking boots soon! Our forecast for today equals perfect hiking weather, but I’m a little concerned about Monday’s full moon hike…it’s supposed to be rainy and cold…I’m afraid the whole thing will end up cancelled. It’s amazing how much weather tinkers with our puny mortal plans. 😉

The weather has been nuts, jumping from 80’s to 20’s. It makes it difficult to get used to one or the other. I could do without the 80’s since I’m not a hot weather fan. Being south of the Mason-Dixon Line, summer will come all too soon.
I’m afraid I’m not well organized lately, and my time management skills seem to have fled (probably don’t want to be here for summer…lol!). I am having similar difficulties with trying to pare things down even though I love pretty much everything I’m doing. Well, maybe not the housework so much, but it’s gotta be done. 🙂

Yep, it’s this jumping back and forth on the weather that’s getting to me, too. Earlier this week, I was in short sleeves…and this morning, it’s snowing. It makes wardrobe choices nearly impossible. 😉 I don’t mind the Summer too, too much, but I do sometimes get a bit envious of people living in other areas when they say things like, “It’s sooooo hot. It must be 85 degrees out there!” 😀

Perhaps our organization and time management skills will make a miraculous return this week. 🙂 With or without them, I hope you have a fabulous week ahead!

Good for you on taking a “goofing off” day. We need them here and there to restore our sanity. I don’t know why some of us fill our calendars so much. I’ve definitely learnt to cut back..
I, too, read each and every one. Might take me a week, but I do!

Oh, if there just weren’t so many things in the world that I want to do…then maybe I could get my calendar under control. Yep, I’m blaming the world for my chaos. 😉 I will definitely be cutting back after this Sweeney Todd production is over. And Summer break should provide some more calm since I won’t be doing nearly as much school-related stuff. This busy time shall pass. 🙂

Yeah, it takes me a few days to get all of them read sometimes, too, but aren’t they great? I love all of the little glimpses into different lives! 😀

I hope you have a fantastic week!

I empathise with your busy schedule and having to make hard decisions as to what has to go. I’m sure you made the right choice in not running your own relay for life team but you are still participating and that is the important thing. Your own health is more important than overburdening yourself. Have a good week.

    • Nerd in the Brain March 12, 2017 at 7:10 am

Yeah, I think I’ve made peace with participating at a more “relaxed” level. I still feel like I’m contributing to the cause…without nearly the amount of work and time consumption. And you’re absolutely right about my health (and stress levels) being important…I’m no good to anyone if I wear myself out or make myself sick. (It can sometimes be difficult to convince other people of that…especially when they’re only a small piece of the puzzle and don’t realize the 100 other things I have going on.)

I hope you have a beautiful (and relaxing) week!

I’ve just come across the bullet journal for organising. I’m in a constant battle with my prioritisation and where to do it, notepad, diary, to do tracker on the ipad, onenote….etc. So I’m about 3 days in of using a bullet journal technique and it feels right for my head….allows you to put your priorities in the format you need, just feels like a robust easy framework to get started. Has made me feel better about all my crazyness!

I’m so glad the bullet journal is working for you! I tried that a few months ago, but I found myself being far too concerned with “decorating” the thing than actually organizing anything. 😀 Right now, I use a combination of Google Calendar, Habitica (an RPG/gaming organization app), and Trello. Trello is really great for prioritizing as well as breaking big projects into little steps, so I find myself using that one more and more recently.

I hope you have a wonderful week…and that your bullet journal becomes a long-time friend!

Enjoy your hike! Our weather here is much the same. It has been a roller coaster winter. Your day off sounds absolutely wonderful. I need to take days like that also from time to time. I wish I had words of wisdom regarding time management and prioritization but I am in much the same boat. Hard decisions must be made sometimes. I am glad you are still participating in Relay for Life, but avoiding all of the work of having your own team.

I didn’t even look at the weather, but I should have! I’m freezing today, even though I know here in Houston it’s not *that* cold, it’s still colder than it’s been all week. And I haven’t needed a coat practically all “winter”.

As for taking a break, I’m a big proponent for the Mental Health Day. My mom used to let us take an occasional day off from school (and now work) to keep our mental health in check by not overdoing it. In fact, I think you need to plan one purposefully, otherwise life is just overwhelming! Then again, I sometimes get overwhelmed and take an unplanned one, and those sometimes become more than one day. :/

Try to stay warm! See you next weekend!

I hope you managed to stay warm…and that you get all of the breaks you want and need. I’m a huge fan of the mental health day, but I’ve found that now that all of my work is at home, it’s much tougher to separate from it and tune it out. It was like a day-long mental exercise that was essentially a grown up version of “I’m not touching you. I’m not touching you. I’m not even looking at you.” 😀 It totally worked though. 🙂

I hope the rest of your week is fantastic!

Our weather has been like that lately, too. We’d have weather in the 70’s and then 20’s and 30’s and snow or ice. It’s not fun but I would not want to change to all cold and I relish those warm days. They just make the cold days feel even colder. I am also looking at how to prioritize and spend my time more wisely. It’s tough but I’m committed to figuring it out. I love that you love all that you do. That’s a life well lived! Thanks for hosting the linkup.

You are such a wonderful, kind, and lovely force to have in the world. 🙂 And I do not at all think you should feel guilty for taking a step back; after all, if you don’t take care of yourself (even if just mental stress wise!) you’ll hit a point where you won’t be able to do ANY of the amazing things you do.
I saw on your IG that you guys did get some snow! I can’t say I’m super impressed with the Noreaster that just swept through last night. We got about 15 inches. I just want spring and gardening season to be here!

We totally did get some snow, and it was nice enough to be completely gone by later that very same day. 🙂 It is way too late in the Winter to be getting 15 inches of snow…someone should really tell the weather to get its act together! I’m not much of a gardener, but I was pretty sad to see the snow and cold temperatures kill all of the flowers in our yard. *sigh* I hope you get some gardening weather soon!
